Hello, satin lovers!

With the rise and popularity of social media, any girl can now become a coveted “It” girl - a woman that has achieved fame (and sometimes fortune) due to her socialite-esque lifestyle. There are several ways that one can go about achieving “It” girl status, but for brevity’s sake, I’m going to write a version that will work for any girl.

Look The Part.

The first step is to choose your signature style. Every It girl has one when she first enters onto the scene. This look may change over time but it is imperative to have a signature look because you want to look as if you belong. This doesn’t mean that you need to spend a lot of money on your look but it does mean that you need to have style.

Style is what separates the average girl that wears jeans and a tank top from Rosie Huntington Whiteley wearing jeans and a tank top. It’s how you wear it. Remember: Fashion is what you buy. Style is what you do with it.

How to develop an "It Girl" style? Creating your signature look and having style is one the first steps to becoming an It Girl. I can’t stress this enough: Dressing the part is vital.

You have to look like an It girl otherwise no one is going to believe you or take your seriously. But don’t fret, style can be learned with study and practice.

For some of us, looking the part may mean having to do a complete overhaul from top to bottom. Don’t let that discourage you. Have you seen some of these celebutantes and socialites before and afters? If they can do it, so can you. Just start with one area (i.e. clothing) and work your way from there.

Promote, promote, promote.

Social media will be your best friend. It will be a major contributing factor to launching your It girl career. This is where you will begin to brand yourself and choose what kind of It girl you want to be. Do you want to be known as a beauty guru? Fashionista? Jetsetter? Most Wanted Model? Pick your niche. (You can always branch out later).

As of right now, Instagram is the It Girl social media account to have. Research other It girl Instagram accounts that fit the niche you’re going to be apart of so you can get an idea of the type of topics and trends that are currently the talk of the various It girl scenes. This will include everything from events, fashion, music, etc.

Remember: Blatantly copying or imitating another is an It girl faux pas. Do not copy. I repeat: DO NOT COPY. It Girls never copy, they are the trendsetters. Only look for inspiration. After you’ve become established on Instagram (with some followers), you can branch out to other social media platforms (such as Twitter or Snapchat).

Read everything you can on social media marketing and PR. Remember, social media is your ticket to begin achieving It girl status. It is one of the easiest (if not the easiest way) for an ordinary girl (ordinary as in “I’m not apart of a rich and famous family”) to become an It girl.

It’s Time To Jetset.

This doesn’t mean that you need to fly private while heading to Ibiza on your way to party at Pacha. However, it does mean that you need to begin putting yourself out there and attending events that’s related to your niche and personal brand. Decided to become a beauty guru? Beautycon and IMATS should be on your list. Next top Model or Insta Fashionista? Start planning for New York and Paris Fashion week. Wanna be Jetsetter? Get ready for Cannes and Art Basel. For every niche there are events to attend. Research. Google. Search through Instagram. Create a list and a plan of what to attend.

If you live in a big metropolitan city such as New York or London you’re in luck. A lot of events will most likely be happening in your city so you won’t have far to go. But for the rest of us, traveling to all of these places and events can get expensive. After all, It girls are known for being seen everywhere. That’s part of what makes them an It girl.

But here’s where proper planning and researching will save you (and your wallet). Look into travel hacking. Research which events will be best to attend for your brand. While it may seem obvious to attend big name events (for example New York Fashion week), it may be more advantageous to attend smaller events first where you’re more likely to stand out.

Which brings me to my last point on this topic: Don’t be afraid to start out small. It takes time to build up a large social media following and starting out small will give you some much needed practice and get you accustomed to being in the spotlight and networking.

Embrace Your Inner Narcissist.

Here’s a commonly used ploy by agents, managers, PR and marketing Companies, etc: It’s called the “fake paparazzi” effect.

Here’s how it works:
  • A rising star needs to generate buzz.
  • A PR company/agent/etc will employ photographers who will pretend to be paparazzi. But it doesn’t have to stop there. Some PR companies have gotten big and bold with this. We’re talking limousines, bodyguards, camera crews, fake fans, etc. The whole nine yards.
  • Next, the “rising star”  enters out of a hotel, club, restaurant, etc. next to a hot spot location such as Times Square. That’s when the magic happens.
  • Cameras begin to flash, “fans” and paparazzi begin to yell and scream the rising star’s name. Bodyguards surround the star.
  • People begin turning their heads wondering who the hell is that and what the hell is going on.
Sounds crazy? It is. But it’s also bloody brilliant. Don’t take my word for it. Google it. Or better yet, here’s a Youtube video of this in action.

This is just one tactic of many. Keep in mind that It Girls have their pictures taken…all the time. Don’t be afraid to hire a videographer to help document your attendance at an event so you can post it on Youtube or employing photographers so that your Instagram account will look more professional (you have to look the part remember?). You may not realize it, but a lot of your favorite Insta girls are employing these tactics and much more.

This Is Just Beginning.

With enough time, dedication and persistence you should be well on your way of becoming an It girl or at the very least have a growing number of followers.

So what’s next? You’ll notice that once you reach a certain number of followers you will begin to become an “Influencer”. This is where you’ll get to hone your skills. You will begin to negotiate ad campaigns and sponsorships. You might even start to appear in magazines. You’ll definitely be offered free swag and invites to some of the hottest events and parties.

Now take heed: This is the part will it may be time to seek counsel; either from an entertainment lawyer or at least having consultations with a PR firm or an agent. Why? Well, when you get to the level where well known companies are beginning to reach out to you and contracts are being written - money is about to be made. You will most likely have already started to make some money by this point (from smaller influencer ad campaigns and sponsorships), but now you’re approaching the big leagues. Don’t think you can continue being a one woman show. Case in point: Aimee Song (Song of Style), Chiara Ferragni (TheBlondeSalad) and Arielle Charnas (Something Navy)  all netted 6 figure deals this year alone. Kristina Bazan (Kayture) was reportedly paid “at least 1 million” for her partnership with L’oreal. You may not need an entourage, but you’re definitely going to need a right hand man.

As the saying goes, “there’s levels to this”, and the same thing applies to being an It girl. How far do you want to climb the ladder to It girl fame? Do you want to be local, national or international? Only want to be known in certain circles such as art or fashion? You get to decide. Thanks to social media, how far you want to go is completely up to you.

That's all for now!

I hope it's useful and easy to understand. Don't forget to subscribe to the newsletter, so you won't miss a new arcticle about fashion and life style every week!
